Youth centers
The major structural drivers underlying youth engagement in conflict in Somalia are high unemployment and lack of sustainable livelihood opportunities, week education systems, poor governance and limited political participation and continued violence.
The youth centers contribute to SDG 3 ‘Good health and wellbeing’ to provide sexual and reproductive health information and services, making them youth-friendly; SDG 4 ‘Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all’ through the improvement of TVET centers and standards. The centers will contribute to SDG5 ‘Achieve gender equality and empower women and girls’ by contributing to improving the capacity of young women to achieve autonomy, voice, participation and representation.
Y-peer currently runs the Tilmaame Youth Centre in Garowe, Hage youth center in Buuhoodle and Dandor youth center in Bossaso, the construction and implementation of these youth centres was supported by the EU with the technical support of UNFPA and implemented by Y-peer.
Currently the youth centers provide the following services:
- Literacy and Numeracy programmes
- Computer trainings
- Reproductive health information and education with appropriate counselling services.
- Life skills short course
- Free open work space with internet for everyone as long as the beneficiary carries their own computer
