Omar Abdullahi Musse’s journey was one of resilience in the face of unimaginable hardship. Born and raised in Afgoye district, the 21-year-old had seen his world shattered when his father tragically lost his life in an explosion in Mogadishu back in 2020.

As the eldest son, the heavy weight of their survival rested squarely on Omar’s shoulders. With limited opportunities and financial resources, he knew he had to find a way to contribute to his family’s well-being.

In this dire situation, a glimmer of hope emerged when Y-Peer Somalia announced an opportunity for self-employment toolkits for TVET graduates. Omar seized this chance with both hands, determined to forge a path towards a brighter future.

Omar was selected and enrolled on the technical training in mobile repair training course at SOTTI TVET centre. Ffter finishing it he received the precious tools from the Somali Youth Employment Project (SOYEP) Implemented by Y-Peer Somalia and Save the Children with funding from Silatech.

Equipped with his new skills and toolbox, Omar set to work repairing mobile devices for his community. His diligence and expertise quickly earned him a reputation for reliability. A steady stream of customers, and income, soon followed.

“The first time I could provide a full meal for my family from my own earnings, I felt like a weight had been lifted. This was just the beginning,” he shares.

“With an expected monthly income of 300-400 USD, Omar could now afford to provide regular meals for his family and, most importantly, enrol his younger brothers and sisters in school,” he shared, a mixture of relief and pride in his voice.

Grateful for the opportunity he had been given, Omar expressed his heartfelt thanks to Y-Peer Somalia, Save the Children, and Silatech for believing in him and providing the support he needed to turn his dreams into reality.

Through hard work, determination, and the generosity of others, Omar had not only reshaped his own destiny but had become a beacon of hope for his loved ones and community – a living embodiment of the power of resilience in the face of adversity.
